Dr. Adam Taller was born and raised in Ottawa. He is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario where he received an Honours degree in Microbiology and Immunology in 2005, and his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree with distinction in 2009. After graduation, Dr. Taller returned to Ottawa to practice dentistry; he lives there with his wife and two children.

Often there are situations where the strength of the remaining tooth is diminished due to damage from large cavities, grinding, cracks, fractures or teeth treated with root canals. In these instances, a standard filling would inadequately address this loss in strength.

For long-term protection to the tooth, and to allow the tooth to survive normal daily wear, a crown can be used to cover the tooth in its entirety and protect it from further damage.Crowns can be fabricated from many different materials such as porcelain, zirconia, gold, or a combination. Each material has its own benefits and drawbacks; your dentist can discuss with you which material would be most suitable for your tooth.

A common option considered when replacing a missing tooth is a dental bridge. A dental bridge replaces a missing tooth by extending over the area of tooth loss. It is held in place by your natural teeth or dental implants and is a permanent restoration that cannot be removed. The most simple bridge consists of two crowns with an artificial tooth joined in between them, and increase in size an complexity as the number of missing teeth increase.

There are times when a tooth is so badly decayed, broken, or infected, that it is not possible to restore or save the tooth. In these cases, removing the tooth is the only practical thing to do for the health of the patient. Third molars, known as wisdom teeth, often have to be removed as well. These teeth usually erupt in people between the ages of 15 and 23.

When dealing with one or more missing teeth, dental implants are well established alternatives to traditional bridges and dentures. A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a small titanium screw. Titanium is used because of its ability to fuse with your natural bone. Once fused, the titanium screw will help prevent bone loss over time and will act as a solid support for an artificial tooth that looks like a real tooth.
