Dr. Barb Deter obtained her degree in Veterinary Medicine from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1991. Since then, Barb has cared for companion animals in Guelph and the surrounding area. She is known for her balanced, compassionate approach to small animal health care, her skill as a surgeon and her interest in incorporating effective complementary practices.

Southgate Animal Hospital backs onto Preservation Park giving the clinic a rural feel at the edge of beautiful Guelph. Inside the clinic, our floors are made of a non-porous and shock absorbing surface that gives pets secure footing and comfort. Ample windows provide plenty of natural light to our work areas and dog housing area.
Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is a life-threatening disease caused by bacteria that are shed in the urine of infected wildlife, especially skunks and raccoons. Our pets can be exposed to this disease through any contact with an opening in their skin or a mucous membrane such as their eyes, mouth or nose. Leptospira can survive for long periods of time in moist environments such as puddles, streams and wet or dewy grass that is frequented by infected wildlife.

Our clinic is equipped with a full dentistry suite including an ultrasonic scaler, dental surgical instruments and a digital dental x-ray machine. A mouth with healthy teeth and gums should have very little odour--maybe just a trace of a recent meal or favourite chew toy. It's not just about bad breath.
Testing for Heartworm and Tick-borne Diseases

What is a Heartworm Test? A heartworm test uses a small sample of a dog's blood to screen for the presence of heartworm infection. It is important to note that it is only able to detect the presence of heartworms that were introduced more than 6 months prior to testing. That means the tests that we perform this season are to ensure that your dog was not infected LAST season.
