Dr. Rix feels that it is important to identify the causes of orthodontic problems and correct these causes along with the orthodontic problems in the interests of stability, effective treatment and related health issues. Correcting the causes of orthodontic problems around 6 to 10 years of age appears to enable a greater improvement in growth compared to treating during adolescence.
A significant portion of treatment in our practice is "interceptive" treatment in 6 to 10 year olds. Dr. Rix understands that environmental influences are a significant cause of orthodontic problems either directly or through mouth breathing or the development of an orofacial myofunctional disorder (OMD).

Report
I love being an orthodontist. There is tremendous satisfaction in transforming the smiles of my patients and seeing the difference it makes in their lives. It is a privilege for me to get to know my patients and be a part of their lives through the course of treatment. Orthodontics is a challenging field.
Orthodontics
Report
Orthodontics is the area of dentistry which includes the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. Dentofacial Orthopedics refers to the guidance of the growth of the jaws and the bones of the face for facial balance and well fitting jaws.
Just as there are specialties in medicine such as cardiology for your heart or dermatology for your skin, there are specialties in dentistry such as periodontics for your gums and orthodontics for your face and smile. An orthodontist is a dental specialist, having 8-11 years of training in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities.

Report
Orthodontic treatments vary so much in techniques and lengths of treatments that it is not possible to provide a meaningful approximation of costs. Dr. Rix will provide an initial consultation at no charge, and will provide an estimate of the cost for treatment for you or your child at that time. It is also your choice to attend a different orthodontist to get a second opinion about treatment and costs.
Emergency Care
Report
As a general rule, you should call our office when you experience severe pain or have a painful appliance problem you can't take care of yourself. You might be surprised to learn that you may be able to solve many problems yourself temporarily until you can get to our office. If there is a loose piece that you can remove, put it in a plastic bag or envelope and bring it with you to your next appointment.
Causes
Report
The causes of orthodontic problems (etiology of malocclusion) can be grouped into three basic groups: specific causes, genetic influences, and environmental influences. Disturbances of dental development such as missing teeth, extra teeth, improper guidance of the eruption of teeth (impacted teeth), and trauma to teeth.
