200 Amp Upgrade: Who Needs It
Report
A 200 amp main electrical service is now considered the standard for residences in our region (BC Canada). Most homes built before 2000 have 100 amp services or less. It is an expensive upgrade, so it is not to be undertaken without good reason. So how do you know if you really need one? In this picture the main switch is the one on top, in the centre.
Knob and Tube Wiring
Report
We are experts at assessing, repairing, removing and replacing knob-and-tube wiring. Many houses in Victoria still have this type of wiring functioning and we work with it all the time. It is not inherently dangerous and it still complies with Electrical Code Regulations in most cases. Some insurance companies stipulate that knob and tube wiring must be removed from any house before they will insure it.
Electric Vehicle Charging
Report
Fairfield Electric installs all types of electric vehicle charging stations quickly and neatly. These chargers take a lot of power-we can advise you as to what model or size of charger is best suited to your existing electrical. BC Hydro, our power utility, offers information and rebates for Electric Vehicle Charging.
Aluminum Wiring
Report
Aluminum wire is safe when used in the right application and if it is correctly installed and maintained. You can determine if your house is wired with aluminum by looking at the wiring, either between open floor joists in the basement, up in the attic, or at the service panel.

You can call Fairfield Electric at 250-885-1227 and request a service call to confirm if there is aluminum wiring at your place and if so, how much of the wiring in aluminum. In our experience, aluminum seems to be present in most, perhaps all small family homes built in the 70's here in Victoria BC.
Silver Label for Mobile Homes
Report
Used mobile homes (whether de-registered or not) may only be offered for sale in the Province of British Columbia without re-inspection provided that they bear an approval mark and that the wiring has not been altered. Additional wiring done under permit does not invalidate the original label. When the electrical wiring has been altered without a permit, the mobile home must be inspected and a new approval label applied.
