Moisture is the result of blocked weeping beds or prolonged rainfall soaking into your basement walls. Extended moisture leads to a build up of mold: typically a black speckled texture and exposure can trigger allergies and other health risks. Water will always take the path of least resistance and pool at the lowest point.

Flooding and pools are the result of basement wall cracks, deteriorated mortar joints or broken weeping tiles. The problem will persist until you have it fixed professionally. In basements with cracks or eroding mortar joints, water will naturally seep in. If you have a finished basement and cannot spot visible wall or foundation cracks, look for efflorescense: a whitish yellow crystalization build up.
