At Calgary Family Law Associates, our goal is to provide you with effective legal support and assistance tailored to your unique situation. When we come across issues that spill into another practice area, we can consult with each other or refer to each other to help you devise the best strategy to pursue your goals.

In addition to our role as lawyers, members of our team also serve as registered mediators. We understand that, while many clients want to fight to protect their rights, their ultimate goal is to find a way to resolve their issues as quickly as possible. Alternative forms of dispute resolution are generally faster, more cost-effective, and allow the parties input into the decisions made.

Property Division
Report
Separation does not just mean emotionally separating from your partner; it also means separating your finances and physical possessions. While it may seem that separating possessions should not be as difficult as separating lives, it can be emotionally wrenching and devastating to split what you have worked for together.
Spousal/Partner Support
Report
For the most part, spousal support (alimony) is meant to be a temporary measure to give one spouse time to get back on his or her feet. It is not always an automatic entitlement or obligation, especially in short-term marriages or in relationships where spouses are financially equal.

Often partner support (also called adult interdependent partner support for common law couples) is a way for a lower-income spouse to gain compensation for sacrifices made during the relationship.Sacrifices may include moving to support the higher-earning partner's career, putting him or her through school and taking time off work to raise children.
Common Law Relationships
Report
If you are living common law, whether in a same-sex or opposite-sex relationship, your separation is covered by Alberta's Family Law Act and the Adult Interdependent Relationships Act, not Canada's Divorce Act. While most of the challenges will be the same as married spouses, some of the solutions and vocabulary may be slightly different.
