Gum recession is typically caused by advanced gum disease (or periodontal disease) - specifically, periodontitis. When there is a buildup of plaque around your teeth and gum line, the gums may become inflamed and irradiated, which may progress into gingivitis.
If this is left untreated, the underlying bone usually resorbs and the gums will begin pulling away from the teeth, making the teeth look longer and become looser, which may cause your teeth to fall out.In rarer cases, gum recession has been caused by severe over-brushing. Although this may all seem scary, gum recession is a very slow and gradual process and can take years to develop into a serious condition.
