Empowering First Nations Through Education and Counselling
Established in 1985, the Oneca (ONECA) has dedicated over three decades to advancing culturally responsive education and counseling services for First Nations communities across Ontario. Our organization was founded on the principle that Indigenous communities require specialized tools to address their unique educational and counseling needs. Through our Native Counsellor Training Program, which has graduated over 450 professionals since 1977, we cultivate expertise in Indigenous issues, career guidance, and culturally appropriate counseling techniques. We maintain strategic partnerships with post-secondary institutions to facilitate academic articulation agreements and provide professional development opportunities. Our annual three-day conference serves as a critical platform for knowledge exchange among education counselors, featuring workshops, presentations, and networking opportunities.

As a trusted resource center, we distribute specialized materials and maintain a counselor directory to support service delivery. Our commitment to advancing Indigenous education is demonstrated through scholarship programs, student placement initiatives, and research projects like the Transitions initiative that examine educational pathways for First Nations, Mtis, and Inuit students. We actively participate in policy discussions and maintain representation on multiple education committees to advocate for systemic improvements in Indigenous education services.
