Long ago, health care was just a doctor assisted by a nurse. In the last century, successful delivery of care has developed into a team approach. Modern health now relies on the specialized skills of a third group -- the highly-trained health science professionals who belong to HSA.

Patients who are dealing with a chronic disease, acute illness or serious injury may encounter six, seven or more different health care professionals in their journey to recovery and rehabilitation.HSA represents more than 20,000 health science professionals at over 250 hospitals and agencies in acute care, long-term care and community health, including workers at child development centres and transition houses.

You wouldn't drive a car without insurance, would you? Your job is no different; it may be good now but you need support if something goes wrong - if you get sick, if a new manager makes changes that aren't working, if you're accused of doing something wrong. Employees with union representation are usually paid more, enjoy better benefits, worry less about security and have more say in the workplace.

HSA's highly-qualified and experienced staff includes labour relations officers, negotiators, lawyers, classification, pension and benefit specialists, organizers, occupational health and safety specialists, and a department dedicated to communications, research and member education.

Our staff negotiate collective agreements, handle classifications issues and grievances and - if necessary - defend members' rights in courts, arbitrations and other legal tribunals.Many of HSA's labour relations staff have worked as HSA members in the health care or social services fields. Our staff understand the work you do and the challenges you face.
