Shima Karate has been a part of our community since 1988, offering classes in traditional Goju-Ryu Karate in Nanaimo. Karate is fun and exciting way to improve your life, and there are many positive benefits to practicing this honored art. Karate is taught in a dojo the word "do" means way, road, or path and the word "jo" means place.
Therefore, the place of the way is the dojo, which is a place of honor and respect. At Shima we are not trying to make a 9 year old Super Black Belt. Due to developmental stages kids that age are usually not physically ready and are definitely not mentally ready to be a black belt. Our goal at Shima is to develop a child over the long run to be an outstanding teen with integrity and a sense of self worth and of personal goals.

Programs

4 to 7 year olds - Here we work on improving coordination and expand the students karate knowledge with techniques that take them into the stripe belt system. 7 to 11 year olds - At this stage the students can physically keep up with the demands of the full karate program. They learn katas, sparring and develop self defense skills.

Our instructors will lead an hour of fun karate fitness & games to make sure your special someone has an amazing active learning experience with their best friends.
We provide: invitations for all your guests; clear descriptions of our location & the event plan; an hour of karate instruction; a second hour to use our foyer with tables and chairs for your family to host food, cake and present festivities; our instructor will do a full clean-up after the event.You supply: food, cake, beverages & table-settings.
